Squadron Leader Shantanu Basu Remembered at National War Memorial, Pune-based Family Attends Ceremony
Pune/New Delhi, 2nd September 2025: In a deeply moving ceremony at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, Rupa Basu and her daughter, Koyla Basu—residents of Wanowrie, Pune—paid homage to their late husband and father, Squadron Leader Shantanu Basu (Flying (Pilot)), who was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra for his supreme sacrifice in service of the nation.
Originally from Ranipur in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, Squadron Leader Basu was posted at Air Force Station Leh with the Cheetah Helicopter Squadron. Known for his exceptional flying skills and dedication, he frequently operated in the hostile terrain of the Siachen Glacier, the world’s highest battlefield.
On April 11, 2007, during what began as a routine logistics mission to Amar Helipad, his Cheetah helicopter suffered a sudden engine failure. Demonstrating remarkable composure and courage, Squadron Leader Basu attempted to maneuver the aircraft to safety. Despite his heroic efforts, the helicopter crash-landed, claiming the lives of all on board.
His actions reflected the ethos of the Indian Air Force—placing duty and service above self. The Shaurya Chakra, one of India’s highest peacetime gallantry awards, stands as a testament to his bravery and ultimate sacrifice.
At the solemn tribute, Rupa Basu and Koyla Basu stood in quiet reverence, their grief intertwined with pride. “His courage continues to inspire us every day,” said Rupa, recalling her husband’s legacy.
For Pune, the ceremony holds special significance, as the city has long been home to a vibrant defense community and many families of serving and retired armed forces personnel. Squadron Leader Basu’s story adds to the city’s proud legacy of valour and sacrifice.
As the evening sun bathed the memorial in golden light, the Basu family’s presence was a poignant reminder of the human cost behind the nation’s security—an enduring salute to a son of India who gave his all.
