Pune: Pedestrian Bridge Construction Near Deccan Gymkhana Metro Station to Resume; Bhide Bridge to Be Temporarily Closed for Traffic
Pune, 9th September 2025: In a move to improve connectivity between the city’s core areas and the metro network, pedestrian bridges are being constructed to link the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Garden and Deccan Gymkhana metro stations to Pune’s traditional peth areas.
The pedestrian bridge connecting Chhatrapati Sambhaji Garden Metro Station to the inner-city peth areas was recently inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and is now open to the public and metro commuters.
Meanwhile, work on a similar pedestrian bridge connecting the Deccan Gymkhana Metro Station to the old city had been temporarily halted during the Ganesh festival to ease public movement on Bhide Bridge. This new pedestrian bridge is being constructed above the existing Bhide Bridge, which spans the Mula River.
Once completed, the bridge is expected to provide significant convenience to residents of Narayan Peth, Shaniwar Peth, and Laxmi Road, as well as students commuting to educational institutions in the area. It will offer direct pedestrian access to the Deccan Metro Station.
Traffic Alert:
As construction work is set to resume on Wednesday (September 10), Bhide Bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic starting midnight tonight (Tuesday, September 9). However, the road along the riverbed will remain open for traffic.
Pune Metro authorities have requested citizens to use alternative routes such as Lakdi Pul, Balgandharva Bridge, and Z Bridge during the closure period. The metro administration aims to complete the work on the pedestrian bridge at the earliest and has appealed for public cooperation in the meantime.
Pune Metro has expressed that the new infrastructure will significantly enhance pedestrian and commuter connectivity in the long run.
