Southwest Monsoon Begins Withdrawal from Rajasthan, Early by Three Days
Pune, 15th September 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the southwest monsoon has started its withdrawal from western Rajasthan, marking the beginning of its return journey three days earlier than the normal schedule.
Traditionally, the withdrawal date is around September 17, but this year the monsoon began retreating on September 14. Last year, the withdrawal started on September 23.
According to IMD officials, weather indicators such as reduced humidity, dry conditions, changing wind patterns, and the development of an anti-cyclone over the region confirmed the onset of the withdrawal phase. The monsoon has retreated from areas including Ganganagar, Nagaur, Jodhpur, and Barmer. Favorable conditions are likely to push the withdrawal further into parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, and Gujarat over the next two days.
This year’s monsoon journey was unusual: it arrived over Kerala on May 24, reached the Konkan coast and Maharashtra by May 25, and advanced rapidly to cover the entire country by June 29—taking just 12 days to reach all regions. The monsoon lingered over Rajasthan for nearly two months and 16 days before beginning its retreat.
Heavy Rainfall in Marathwada
Meanwhile, several parts of Maharashtra continue to receive heavy showers. In Marathwada, 33 mandals across Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Beed, Latur, Hingoli, and Dharashiv reported significant rainfall in the 24 hours ending Sunday morning. Beed district recorded the heaviest downpour, while other districts experienced light to heavy rainfall across different areas.
