Pune, 20th September 2025: Pune city has witnessed more rainfall this September than in the last five years, according to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Shivajinagar, the city’s observatory, recorded 237.04 mm of rainfall till Friday, making it the second-highest September rainfall in the past decade.

The highest September rainfall in the last 10 years was in 2019, when 287.7 mm was recorded in Shivajinagar. In contrast, 2018 saw the lowest at just 30.3 mm. This year’s total has already surpassed figures for 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024.

Rainfall data for the past five years (September, in mm):
2020 – 198
2021 – 83.6
2022 – 232
2023 – 165.7
2024 – 207.8

The recent surge in rainfall has been attributed to the westward movement of a low-pressure area over Chhattisgarh and Odisha, along with a cyclonic circulation over Maharashtra. These conditions triggered heavy downpours in Pune city and surrounding areas, leading to waterlogging and flooding in some parts. A yellow alert was also issued for Pune district and the ghat regions.

“Due to favorable conditions such as high daytime temperature and humidity, September often sees thunderstorms with intense showers. In such cases, heavy rain can occur in a short span of time. We have also recorded incidents of more than 50 mm rainfall in a single day in the past,” said S. D. Sanap, a scientist at the IMD.

With nearly two weeks left in September, the city may see further rainfall, potentially pushing this year’s tally closer to the 2019 record.
