Surveillance Vans Deployed, AI-Based CCTV Installation Begins in Pune for Smarter Traffic Management
Pune, 26th September 2025: In a bid to ease frequent traffic congestion across the city and its suburbs, the Pune Traffic Police and the Municipal Corporation have begun implementing a Smart Traffic Management System. As part of this initiative, surveillance vans are being deployed to survey major roads and junctions, following which artificial intelligence (AI)-powered CCTV cameras are being installed.
“Implementation of the Smart Traffic Management System has begun in Pune to control congestion, unruly traffic, and accidents. With AI-based CCTV systems installed at key junctions and highways, monitoring will become more effective, and preventive measures will be enforced based on the data collected,” said Himmat Jadhav, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic Branch, Pune City.
Joint surveys are currently underway at accident-prone and high-congestion spots. The AI-based traffic control system will enable immediate action against violators, including wrong parking, driving on the wrong side, jumping signals, and other traffic rule violations. Authorities are also planning to introduce a Dynamic Response System, Green Corridors for emergency vehicles, and automated traffic signal systems to ensure smoother traffic flow.
Traffic congestion continues to be a major challenge on national and state highways passing through Pune. Heavy jams are frequently reported, particularly along the following routes:
Yerwada to Wagholi stretch towards Ahilyanagar
Hadapsar, Uruli Kanchan, Fursungi on Solapur Road
Kharadi, Magarpatta areas
Katraj, Kondhwa, Chandni Chowk, Kothrud, Anand Rishiji Chowk, Baner, and Pashan along the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway
Benefits of AI-Based CCTV
Automatic penal action against unruly motorists
Data-driven analysis for policy-making and long-term improvements
Relief from congestion and accident-related risks
Reduction in pollution and smoother travel experience
Enhanced safety for both pedestrians and motorists
