Pune Traffic Police to Launch AI-Based WhatsApp Chatbot for Reporting Traffic Violations
Pune, 3rd October 2025: In a bid to curb rising incidents of traffic violations and reduce delays in issuing e-challans, the Pune Traffic Police are developing a new WhatsApp-Chatbot system powered by artificial intelligence (AI). The system, which will also allow citizens to directly report violations, underwent its first test run on Wednesday (October 1).
Currently, traffic police use the e-challan system by entering vehicle details, capturing a photo, and then issuing a challan in the driver’s name. This process often takes time. To make enforcement faster and more efficient, the AI-powered chatbot will enable citizens to submit photos of traffic violations such as riding without helmets, triple-seat riding, wrong parking, signal jumping, and driving on the wrong side.
Explaining the initiative, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Himmat Jadhav said, “Pune Traffic Police has earlier implemented the PTP app and AI-based CCTV surveillance. The WhatsApp chatbot is another important step towards strengthening road discipline. With this system, ordinary citizens can directly contribute to curbing violations.”
Once a complaint is submitted, the chatbot will analyze the data using AI. If the accuracy level of the violation exceeds 80 percent, a direct challan will be issued to the offender. Jadhav clarified that punitive action will only be taken after the system verifies the details for transparency and accuracy.
The Traffic Branch is also taking technical support from engineering experts to fine-tune the system. The preliminary test has helped identify problems and areas of improvement. According to officials, efforts are underway to resolve these issues and launch the system for public use within the next three months.
