New Delhi, 4th October 2025: Nationwide concern has erupted after reports of 12 child deaths in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh allegedly linked to the consumption of Coldrif cough syrup. In response, authorities in Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have banned the sale of the medicine, while the Union Health Ministry has initiated a detailed probe and sample testing.

According to preliminary findings, a sample from the Coldrif manufacturing facility in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, was found to contain dangerously high levels of diethylene glycol (DEG)—a toxic industrial chemical known to cause severe kidney and liver damage. The tests were conducted by the Tamil Nadu Food and Drug Administration (FDA) following a request from the Madhya Pradesh government.

While six samples collected from Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh were reportedly free of DEG and ethylene glycol (EG), the discovery of excessive DEG in samples from the Tamil Nadu plant has prompted fears of contamination in certain batches. Officials have indicated that the cough syrup will likely be recalled nationwide, and an investigation into the manufacturer, Srisan Pharma, is underway.

What Are DEG and EG?
Diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG) are industrial solvents commonly used in antifreeze, brake fluids, paints, and plastics. They are not meant for pharmaceutical use. In some cases, these chemicals contaminate medicines when industrial-grade raw materials are substituted for pharmaceutical-grade ingredients to cut costs.

DEG is colorless and syrupy, making it deceptively similar to legitimate ingredients like glycerin unless tested in a laboratory.

Why Are They Dangerous?
When ingested, DEG and EG break down into highly toxic compounds that damage the kidneys, liver, and nervous system. In children, symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and reduced urination appear within hours. Without immediate treatment, poisoning can lead to acute kidney failure and death.

Health Ministry Action
The Union Health Ministry has confirmed that samples of the Coldrif syrup are being collected and tested across multiple states. Authorities have urged the public to avoid using the medicine until test results are finalized.

“The presence of diethylene glycol in any medicinal formulation poses a serious health hazard. Strict action will be taken if contamination is confirmed,” a senior official from the Health Ministry said.
