“Kirana Parampara” – A Special Program Series Starting Sunday
Pune, 7th October 2025: The tradition of the Kirana Gharana holds a glorious place in the context of Hindustani Khayal singing. A special program series titled ‘Kirana Parampara’ (Kirana Tradition), which will unveil the contributions of the important personalities of this gharana, is being organized by Swarmayee Gurukul.
This special series, conceived by Swarayogini Dr. Prabha Atre, is set to commence on Sunday, October 12th, as informed in a press note issued by Dr. Bharati M. D., Secretary of the Dr. Prabha Atre Foundation, and Prasad Bhadsavale, the Program Director.
The Kirana Gharana is renowned for its extreme melodiousness and emotional depth. This tradition has gifted the world many eminent artists, starting from Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, to Ganahira Hirabai Barodekar, Sawai Gandharva, Bharat Ratna Bhimsen Joshi, and Swarayogini Dr. Prabha Atre.
‘Kirana Parampara’ is a series that will reveal the essence of many facets of this tradition : the Kirana tradition itself, its branches and sub-branches, significant artists and their singing styles, and the impact this tradition has had on other genres like Natyasangeet, Bhavgeet, and Film music, alongside classical singing. The series will be held on the second Sunday of every month.
The first program, focusing on Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, is scheduled for Sunday, October 12, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the Swarmayee Gurukul auditorium, located across from Chhatrapati Sambhaji Udyan.
Dr. Chaitanya Kunte and Dr. Atindra Sarwadikar, the coordinators of this 22-part series spanning nearly two years, will present in the first installment. Other respected artists and scholars will also feature in the series. Entry to the program is free for music lovers and students of music.
