Maligaon, 20th December 2025: An early morning accident involving the Sairang–New Delhi Rajdhani Express led to the derailment of its locomotive and five coaches in Assam’s Lumding Division, after the train dashed with a herd of elephants. No casualties or injuries to passengers have been reported, railway officials confirmed.

The incident occurred at around 2:17 am on December 20 in the Jamunamukh–Kampur section of Northeast Frontier Railway, approximately 126 km from Guwahati. The affected train was Train No. 20507 DN Sairang–New Delhi Rajdhani Express.

According to railway officials, the locomotive pilot applied emergency brakes after noticing elephants on the track. Despite this, the elephants came in contact with the train, leading to the derailment of the locomotive and five coaches.

Accident Relief Trains and senior officials from the Lumding Divisional Headquarters were immediately rushed to the site. Senior railway authorities, including the General Manager of Northeast Frontier Railway and the Divisional Railway Manager of Lumding, also reached the location to oversee relief and restoration operations.

Passengers from the affected coaches were safely accommodated in vacant berths available in other coaches. After detaching the derailed coaches, the train departed the site for Guwahati at 6:11 am. Railway officials said that additional coaches will be attached once the train reaches Guwahati to accommodate all passengers, after which it will resume its onward journey.

Railway authorities clarified that the incident took place at a location not designated as an elephant corridor.

Train services on the affected section have been regulated, with scheduled trains being diverted through the Up line. Restoration work at the derailment site is currently underway.
