Pune Police Shoot Habitual Offender in Self-Defence

Wagholi/Chandan Nagar, 20th December 2025: Tension prevailed at Awhalwadi Phata in Pune on Saturday evening after police opened fire in self-defence while attempting to detain a habitual offender, officials said.

The incident occurred around 6 pm when a police team from the Chandannagar Police Station’s detection branch (DB) team went to Awhalwadi Phata to apprehend a wanted accused in a vehicle vandalism case. During the operation, the accused allegedly resisted arrest, forcing the police to take defensive action.

According to police, Police Sub-Inspector Davare fired at the leg of the accused in self-defence to prevent further escalation. The injured accused was immediately taken into custody.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 4) Somay Munde identified the accused as Omkar Bhandari (25), a habitual offender with a criminal record. “Bhandari is a habitual offender and an accused in an ongoing vehicle vandalism investigation registered at Chandannagar Police Station. The firing incident took place at around 6 pm,” DCP Munde said.

The accused is currently under police custody, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the firing. Police are conducting a detailed probe into the incident.
