Pune, 27th December 2025: The deadline for registering and installing high-security registration plates (HSRP) for vehicles in Pune is set for Wednesday, December 31. Despite the requirement being mandatory for over 24 lakh vehicles in the city, only around 10 lakh vehicles have received HSRP so far.

According to the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO), a total of 10,17,804 vehicles have been registered for HSRP, while approximately 14 lakh vehicles still await installation. Of the 24,28,589 vehicles registered with the Pune RTO, only 10,54,000 have had the new number plates fitted, reflecting an adoption rate of roughly 35 percent.

The state transport department has extended the deadline six times to encourage vehicle owners to install HSRP. To further boost compliance, the Pune RTO has issued letters to 64 government offices, requesting that their vehicles get the new plates installed by December 31.

Several factors have contributed to the low response from vehicle owners, including lack of interest, delays in online registration, late delivery of plates, and additional charges at some installation centers. Despite this, officials have indicated that no action will be taken against vehicle owners who have not yet installed HSRP — a mindset that has led to further delays.

“Even after multiple deadline extensions, we have not received the expected response from vehicle owners. If the deadline is not extended further, action will be taken against vehicles without HSRP after December 31,” said Swapnil Bhosale, Deputy Regional Transport Officer, Pune.
