Pune, 27th December 2025: Online registration of rent agreements across Maharashtra has come to a standstill for the past five days due to a disruption in Aadhaar (UID) verification services. The technical snag has delayed thousands of registrations daily, inconveniencing citizens and causing revenue loss for the state government.

The Registration and Stamps Department’s online system relies on Aadhaar authentication. However, technical issues have halted the verification process, effectively stopping rent agreement registrations.

Aadhaar verification requests are routed through the Directorate of Information Technology (DIT), Mumbai, which coordinates with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). Only after successful verification is a rent agreement registered. Officials said this verification chain is currently disrupted.

The department’s portal integrates with the GRAS system for online payments and the UIDAI system for Aadhaar verification, with DIT acting as the intermediary. Normally, verification is completed instantly using thumb impressions, and the verification code and Aadhaar photograph are printed on the agreement document.

The system requires annual license renewal, and technical issues often arise during this period. Similar disruptions have been reported every December over the past few years, with the portal remaining non-functional for up to two weeks.

According to the Association of Service Providers, Maharashtra, excluding Mumbai and Pune Rural areas, around 4,000–5,000 rent agreements are registered daily through the system. All these transactions are currently pending due to the verification failure.

Association president Sachin Shingvi said repeated disruptions affect government revenue and significantly impact landlords, tenants, agents, and service providers. Attempts to contact Information Technology Minister Ashish Shelar for comment have so far been unsuccessful.
