Viman Nagar, 30th December 2025: Vehicles waiting at the Pune airport terminal for more than 12 minutes to pick up or drop off passengers will soon face penal charges, as the airport administration prepares to implement a “dwell time” rule to ease traffic congestion. The system is expected to be enforced within a week.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras are being installed at six locations across the terminal premises to monitor vehicle entry and exit. The cameras will scan vehicle number plates and calculate the duration of stay. Vehicles exceeding the 12-minute limit will be charged an additional fee, although the penalty amount is yet to be finalised.

Around 15,000 vehicles enter the Pune airport terminal daily, with many drivers waiting for passengers for extended periods, leading to frequent congestion, particularly during peak night hours. Pune airport currently handles around 200 flights and nearly 35,000 passengers every day.

“We are introducing a time limit for vehicles entering the terminal and have sent a proposal for approval. Installation of ANPR cameras has already begun,” Pune airport director Santosh Dhoke said.

Aeromall Pune vice-president Yuvrajsingh Rajput said the new rule would help curb unnecessary parking inside the terminal and improve traffic flow. He added that similar time restrictions are already in place at major airports such as Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru.

Apart from reducing congestion, officials said the system would also help monitor vehicle movement and enhance overall passenger convenience.
