Pune’s Average Traffic Speed Rises by Over 10% in a Year; Police Target 30 kmph
Pune, 30th December 2025: The average speed of vehicles in Pune has increased by over 10 per cent compared to last year, indicating an improvement in traffic movement, according to data released by the city traffic police. The average traffic speed, which stood at 19.5 kmph last year, has now risen to 22.5 kmph — an increase of 10.44 per cent.
Following this improvement, the Pune traffic police have set a target of increasing the city’s average traffic speed to 30 kmph in the coming years.
Officials attributed the improvement to a series of measures implemented by the traffic police, including the removal of road encroachments, reduction of traffic bottlenecks and improved on-ground traffic management. The expansion of Pune Metro services has also contributed to easing congestion by encouraging greater use of public transport. These initiatives were carried out under the guidance of Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil.
Traffic conditions across the city are being monitored in real time using technology, police said. Systems such as the Pune Municipal Corporation’s Adaptive Traffic Management System (ATMS), along with platforms like Google Maps, Mappls and MapMyIndia, are being used to track vehicle speeds, traffic flow and congestion at major roads and junctions.
Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar said that both short-term and long-term measures have played a role in improving traffic flow. These include road widening to increase capacity, improved road maintenance through coordination with the civic body, signal synchronisation, strict action against wrong-side driving and triple-seat riding, removal of bottlenecks, connecting missing road links, clearing traffic obstructions and upgrading major junctions.
“With continuous enforcement, infrastructure improvements and technology-based monitoring, traffic movement in Pune is expected to improve further,” Kumar said.
