Pune, 30th December 2025: In a major administrative reform, the Maharashtra School Education Department has transferred the responsibility of teacher recruitment to the Maharashtra State Examination Council. The move aims to streamline the recruitment process, reduce administrative delays, and consolidate examinations and selection under a single autonomous body.

Previously, recruitment for schools under local self-government institutions and private aided schools was conducted via the Pavitra portal, with oversight provided by the Office of the Education Commissioner since 2017. The recruitment process involves multiple stages—eligibility tests, intelligence assessments, advertisement acceptance, reservation management, cut-off determinations, and candidate recommendations—which has consumed significant administrative resources, sometimes affecting the office’s ability to focus on other policy priorities.

Under the new arrangement, the Maharashtra State Examination Council, which already conducts the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) and intelligence assessments for teachers, will now manage the entire recruitment process, including examinations, evaluations, and subsequent candidate selection. Officials cited the council’s prior experience in teacher recruitment examinations as a key reason for centralizing these functions.

To ensure smooth execution, a Special Committee (Sukanu Committee) has been constituted under the chairmanship of the Education Commissioner. Members include the Chairperson of the State Examination Council, the Director of the State Educational Research and Training Council, and the Directors of Primary and Secondary Education. The committee will oversee recruitment decisions, allocate responsibilities across offices, and provide recommendations to the government as needed.

The department clarified that, under the council’s supervision, the Teacher Eligibility and Intelligence Test 2025 will serve as the basis for recruitment, with all subsequent selection procedures managed directly by the Examination Council.

This reform is expected to enhance transparency, reduce procedural delays, and ensure efficient filling of teacher positions across Maharashtra, benefiting schools and prospective educators alike.
