Pune, 5th January 2026: In a shocking incident underscoring rising violent crime in the city, a 31-year-old man was allegedly kidnapped, stripped, brutally beaten, and fired upon following a financial dispute on the Katraj–Kondhwa Road. Pune police have registered a case against nine accused, all residents of the Kondhwa area, while a search is underway to trace those who are currently absconding.

According to the police, the victim, who is involved in the vehicle buying and selling business and resides in Kondhwa, was acquainted with the accused. On December 31, an argument reportedly broke out between the parties over financial dealings. During the altercation, the accused allegedly assaulted the victim and forcibly took him away in a car.

Police said that around 11 pm, the victim was taken to an open ground in the Gokulnagar area along the Katraj–Kondhwa road. There, the accused allegedly stripped him naked and subjected him to a severe physical assault. The attack was allegedly recorded on a mobile phone, and the victim was threatened that the footage would be circulated on social media if he approached the police.

Investigators further stated that one of the accused threatened the victim with a pistol kept inside the vehicle and warned him against filing a complaint. The accused allegedly opened fire in his direction, escalating the seriousness of the offence and instilling fear.

Despite being traumatised, the victim later approached the Yeolewadi Police Station on Sunday and lodged a complaint. Following this, a case was registered under relevant sections of law. Senior Police Inspector Amar Kalange visited the spot after receiving information, while Police Sub-Inspector Kharade has been assigned to lead the investigation.

The incident has intensified concerns over violent crimes in Pune. Police records indicate that last year the city reported 79 cases of murder, 153 cases of attempt to murder, and 1,453 incidents of grievous hurt. While authorities claim a 14–15 per cent reduction in serious crimes compared to 2024, recurring cases of violent assaults, attempted murders, and public intimidation have heightened fear among residents.

Police said efforts are being intensified to apprehend all the accused and assured that strict action will be taken to curb criminal activity and restore public confidence.
