Pune, 6th January 2026: After a relatively warm start to the New Year that raised doubts about the continuation of winter, cold conditions made a noticeable comeback in Pune on Tuesday (January 6). The city recorded a sharp drop of around 3 degrees Celsius in minimum temperature within 24 hours, with the mercury settling at 12.9°C, compared to 15.4°C on Monday.

Several other parts of the city also reported a decline of about 2 degrees in minimum temperatures. Chinchwad, which had recorded the highest minimum temperature of 20°C on Monday, witnessed a significant fall of nearly 3 degrees, with Tuesday’s minimum dropping to 17.3°C. Among city locations, Magarpatta recorded the highest minimum temperature at 18.1°C, while the lowest minimum of 11.7°C was reported from Haveli (Loni Kalbhor).

Over the previous three days, Pune had experienced a noticeable rise in minimum temperatures, particularly in the eastern parts of the city, where readings had crossed the 14°C mark. As a result, except for the early morning hours, winter conditions appeared to have weakened across much of the city, with only mild cold felt in some suburban areas.

In December, Pune witnessed a strong cold spell, with minimum temperatures dipping to around 8°C in several areas, triggering near cold-wave conditions. However, from December 31 onwards, minimum temperatures began rising steadily. Contrary to expectations of a sharper cold spell in the New Year, changing weather patterns led to a rapid increase in night temperatures across the city and district over the past four to five days. At Shivajinagar, for instance, the minimum temperature touched 15.4°C on Monday, reflecting a rise of 5 to 6 degrees within a short span.

Central Pune and areas such as Koregaon Park, Magarpatta, Hadapsar and Yerawada had reported a marked reduction in winter chill during this period. Tuesday’s dip, however, brought back a perceptible cold, particularly during the early morning hours.

According to the Pune weather observatory, dry weather is expected to prevail across the city and district for the next two days. Both maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to remain largely stable, with minor fluctuations in cold intensity.
