Pune, 7th January 2026: With an increasing number of residents travelling abroad for higher education, employment, and long-term stays, Pune has witnessed a steady rise in applications for International Driving Permits (IDPs). Data from the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) shows that 5,623 motorists obtained IDPs in 2025, representing a nearly 400 permit increase compared to the previous year.

Official records indicate that 5,184 international driving permits were issued in 2024, marking a consistent increase over the past four years. The growing numbers point to higher overseas mobility as well as greater awareness of legal driving requirements abroad.

An International Driving Permit is compulsory for Indian citizens intending to drive vehicles outside the country and must be obtained from the RTO within the applicant’s residential jurisdiction. Until 2018, the application process involved lengthy manual procedures, often resulting in delays.

To improve efficiency, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways transitioned the entire system to an online platform. Applicants are now required to apply through the Transport Ministry’s ‘Sarathi’ portal, upload scanned documents, and complete preliminary verification digitally.

Authorities clarified that applicants holding a valid Indian driving licence are exempt from undergoing any additional driving tests. However, verification of the driving licence, passport, and a valid visa remains mandatory.

Following online submission, applicants are required to visit the RTO once for physical verification of original documents. Once scrutiny is completed, the International Driving Permit is usually issued within a day, officials said.

Historical data highlights the consistent growth in demand. While 4,294 permits were issued during 2022–23, the number rose to 5,210 in 2023–24, followed by 5,184 in 2024, and peaked at 5,623 in 2025.

Commenting on the trend, Deputy Regional Transport Officer Swapnil Bhosale said the simplified digital process has significantly improved accessibility. “By verifying passport validity, visa duration, and other documents before travel, we are able to issue international driving permits swiftly. The convenience of the online system has led to a steady rise in applications,” he said.

Transport officials believe that faster processing, reduced paperwork, and increased international travel have collectively contributed to the growing demand for International Driving Permits among Pune residents.
