Pune PMC Results 2026: BJP Outclasses Rivals, Secures Absolute Control
Pune, 17th January 2026: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has registered a landslide victory in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) elections, winning an undisputed majority with 120 seats and retaining power for the second consecutive term. The results confirm BJP’s dominance in Pune politics and significantly weaken its main rivals, including the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Congress, and both Shiv Sena factions.
According to the final tally, the Congress managed to improve its position by winning 15 seats, while the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction) was reduced to just one seat. The Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) failed to open their accounts, drawing blanks despite contesting aggressively.
BJP’s Solo Strategy Pays Off
The PMC election, held after a gap of nearly nine years, had generated huge political interest over whether ruling alliance partners in Maharashtra would contest together. Anticipating that a united front could benefit the opposition, the BJP chose to go solo. The party not only distanced itself from alliance compulsions but also strategically managed seat distribution, denied tickets to over 40 sitting corporators, and gave significant preference to women candidates.
The BJP also successfully projected the contest as a straight BJP vs NCP battle, marginalising smaller players. While the NCP ran an aggressive campaign and inducted several BJP rebels, it failed to convert momentum into seats. In 2017, the NCP had won 42 seats; this time, both NCP factions together could secure only 29, marking a sharp decline.
Congress Shows Modest Recovery
Despite being organisationally weak and facing resource constraints, the Congress surprised many by increasing its seat count from 9 in 2017 to 15 in 2026. The party’s campaign focused on civic issues and social harmony. However, its gains were not enough to challenge BJP’s dominance.
Sena, MNS Suffer Major Setback
The BJP’s late decision to contest alone dealt a major blow to the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), which had contested all 123 wards but failed to win a single seat. The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena managed just one corporator, while the MNS failed to win any seat, indicating a collapse of its urban base in Pune.
Key Wins and Margins
Several BJP candidates won with massive margins, including:
Raghavendra Mankar – 26,497 votes
Bharatbhushan Barate – 25,027
Ratnamala Satav – 23,136
Swarada Bapat – 22,681
Narrow victories included:
Khandu Londhe (BJP) – by 55 votes
Vivek Yadav (BJP) – by 62 votes
Prominent leaders who lost included Dattatraya Dhankawade (NCP), Vasant More (Shiv Sena–UBT), and Avinash Bagwe (Congress).
Leaders React
Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol thanked Pune voters for trusting BJP’s development agenda under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, saying the party’s 50-year development vision for Pune had received public approval.
Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil said the civic poll results across Maharashtra reflected public endorsement of the Mahayuti government’s performance.
Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said the people’s verdict is supreme and that parties which fell short would work harder to regain public trust.
Congress leader Mohan Joshi accused BJP of misusing government machinery but praised Congress workers for putting up a strong fight. Pune Congress chief Arvind Shinde said vote division by the NCP helped BJP retain power.
Big Picture
With this emphatic win, the BJP has consolidated its hold over Pune, one of Maharashtra’s most important urban centres. The verdict underlines a fractured opposition and signals that BJP enters the next phase of local governance with a strong mandate and minimal resistance in the PMC.
