Pune, 17th January 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation elections have sent a strong message from voters, triggering a major political churn marked by the defeat of several city-level party presidents and senior former corporators. The results underline a clear shift in voter preference, indicating that established positions and political stature no longer guarantee electoral success in the city.

While BJP city president Dhiraj Ghate and Congress city president Arvind Shinde managed to retain their seats, most other party chiefs failed to secure victories. Among those defeated were Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) city president Sainath Babar, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) city chief Pramod alias Nana Bhangire, Shiv Sena (Thackeray faction) city chief Sanjay More, and Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction) city president Subhash Jagtap, dealing a significant blow to their respective organisations at the city level.

The elections also witnessed mixed fortunes for former mayors and senior civic leaders. Former mayor Vaishali Bankar, former Leader of the House Ganesh Bidkar, Shrinath Bhimale and Nilesh Nikam emerged victorious. However, prominent leaders, including former Deputy Mayor Aba Bagul, former Standing Committee Chairpersons Ashwini Kadam and Balasaheb Bodke, former Leader of the House Vasant More, Dattatray Dhankawade, and Rupali Patil-Thombre, were defeated.

Adding a boost to the Congress, Prashant Jagtap—who had resigned as NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) city president and joined the Congress ahead of the polls—registered a win from the Wanowrie–Salunkhe Vihar ward, strengthening the party’s morale in the city.

Reacting to the outcome, Union Minister of State for Cooperation Murlidhar Mohol said Pune voters had clearly endorsed the BJP’s development-oriented agenda. He stated that the mandate reflected the public’s faith in the party’s vision for progress and assured that the BJP would responsibly fulfill the promises made in its election manifesto.

From the opposition camp, Congress senior vice-president Mohan Joshi said party workers had put up a strong fight despite what he described as the misuse of government machinery by the BJP, from ward delimitation to the counting process. He maintained that the Congress has played a key role in Pune’s development and would continue to raise civic and development-related issues.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Ganesh Bidkar, who secured a decisive victory in the Kasba constituency with a margin exceeding 10,000 votes, said the electorate had rejected divisive politics. He dedicated his win to late BJP leader Girish Bapat and alleged that attempts were made during the campaign to malign his image.

Overall, the election results reflect a decisive voter-driven reset in Pune’s civic politics, rewarding performance and credibility while signalling that political titles and past influence alone are no longer sufficient to secure public support.
