Two Seriously Injured in Pune as Nylon Kite Strings Continue to Threaten Riders
Pune, 20th January 2026: Despite a ban on nylon kite strings, two youths were seriously injured in separate incidents in Pune after coming into contact with the hazardous material, once again highlighting its rampant illegal sale and use in the city.
In the first incident, 34-year-old Aditya Gaud, a resident of Aundh, was injured on January 14 while riding his two-wheeler home from work along Aundh–Baner Road. Around 6:30 pm, near Kasturba Vasahat, a nylon kite string suddenly struck his neck, causing a deep wound. In an attempt to free himself, Gaud grabbed the string with his hand, resulting in additional serious injuries to his hand.
In another incident in the Yerawada area, 35-year-old Amrut Lohkande, a resident of Vishrantwadi, sustained severe facial injuries after a nylon kite string became entangled around his helmet while he was riding on Sadal Baba Dargah Road. The sharp string cut through the helmet and injured his left eye and thumb. Speaking about the incident, Lohkande said the helmet played a crucial role in saving his life.
These incidents have once again exposed the continued use and open sale of nylon manja in Pune, despite a clear ban imposed due to its deadly nature. While the police conduct occasional enforcement drives, citizens allege that these actions are insufficient and lack consistency.
Nylon kite strings pose a serious threat not only to two-wheeler riders and pedestrians but also to birds, particularly during festive seasons and kite-flying events. Following these incidents, citizens have demanded strict and sustained action against those involved in the manufacture, sale, and use of banned nylon manja to prevent further injuries and loss of life.
