Hinjawadi, 22nd January 2026: While the inaugural Pune Grand Tour 2026 — India’s first-ever UCI Class 2.2 international cycling race — has been making headlines for elite competition and world-class talent, a different kind of hero captured the spotlight on Pune’s streets.

Amid the whirl of high-tech bicycles and professional riders, 70-year-old Balu Hiraman Jaunjale emerged as an unexpected star. Riding a humble, traditional desi bicycle, he pedalled alongside the race route with infectious energy. Videos of his ride quickly went viral on social media, earning him affectionate nicknames like “Grandpa Swag” and widespread praise from viewers across the country.

Jaunjale was not an official participant in the race. Local reports suggest he did not have formal entry to compete, but that did not stop him from riding portions of the route, especially during the Hinjawadi stage, where spectators and cameras caught his spirited presence.

As professional cyclists tackled demanding courses through Mulshi, Maval and Sinhagad, Jaunjale’s simple act of riding with joy drew loud cheers and spontaneous applause from the crowd. The contrast between his desi bicycle and the carbon-fibre racing machines carried a clear message: passion for sport knows no age or equipment.

Viral clips showed him riding at a calm, steady pace that belied his age. Social media users praised his “never-give-up spirit,” with some affectionately calling him “International Appa.” Many commented that his enthusiasm was more inspiring than the competition itself.

One widely shared Instagram post from a Pune-based account showed spectators cheering him on, with comments saying his passion stole the show.

While the Pune Grand Tour 2026 is itself a milestone for Indian cycling — attracting riders from around 35 countries and boosting India’s presence on the global cycling map — Jaunjale’s appearance became the event’s standout human-interest story.

His ride was more than a viral moment. It reflected a deeper cultural message about community pride, sportsmanship and the pure joy of participation. As the Grand Tour continues through Pune’s historic streets and scenic countryside, Balu Hiraman Jaunjale’s desi bicycle ride remains one of the most talked-about highlights — a reminder that the most inspiring moments are not always on the podium, but among the people who move the crowd to its feet.
