Pune: Cheque Bounce Dispute Escalates into Violent Attack, Arson in Pune’s Viman Nagar
Viman Nagar, 27th January 2026: A financial dispute over a bounced cheque allegedly spiralled into a violent late-night attack in Pune’s Viman Nagar area, where a businessman was assaulted, robbed, and his motorcycle set on fire in what police describe as an act of intimidation.
The incident occurred around 12:45 am on January 25 near Sanjay Park. Complainant Fahimuddin Mujibuddin Sheikh (44) and his business partner, Rozlin, were travelling on a motorcycle when they were allegedly intercepted by a group of men.
Police investigations revealed that Fahimuddin had supplied Plaster of Paris (POP) material worth ₹7.78 lakh on credit to trader Haider Ali Shah. After a cheque issued for payment was dishonoured, Fahimuddin reportedly initiated legal proceedings — a step that investigators believe angered the accused.
According to police, Shah and his associates allegedly stopped the victims on the road, threatened them with weapons, and physically assaulted Fahimuddin. During the attack, the assailants reportedly robbed Rozlin of a bag and ₹2 lakh in cash.
In a further escalation, the attackers allegedly poured an inflammable substance on the motorcycle and set it ablaze in the middle of the road before fleeing the scene, apparently intending to instil fear and issue a warning.
Airport Police launched an immediate investigation and arrested two key accused — Haider Ali Shah (30) and Rais Pasha (25). A case has been registered against them on charges including robbery, assault, criminal intimidation, and arson.
Officials said efforts are underway to trace five other suspects who are currently absconding, adding that more arrests are likely as the probe continues.
