Renovated Old Terminal at Pune Airport Set to Open Soon, Awaits BCAS Nod

Pune, 10th September 2026: Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol on Wednesday inspected the expanded check-in and security hold areas developed after the renovation of Pune airport’s Old Terminal Building. The upgraded facility is awaiting final clearance from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and is expected to open for passengers soon.

The renovation was undertaken to cater to the rising passenger traffic at the airport and ease congestion during peak hours. Most of the mandatory procedures have been completed, with only the final BCAS approval pending.

“The number of passengers at Pune airport is steadily increasing. Reducing congestion during peak hours while providing better facilities to passengers is our priority. The work to renovate and make effective use of the old terminal building has been completed. Most of the required processes are over and only the final BCAS approval is pending. Instructions have also been issued to BCAS for the same,” Mohol said.

Spread across around 4,075 sq m, the renovated facility includes check-in, pre-embarkation security check (PESC) and security hold areas. The expanded check-in area has 14 CUTE-enabled counters, while two XBIS machines and one random XBIS machine have been installed in the check-in area. The PESC area has four XBIS machines and eight door-frame metal detectors (DFMDs).

Two boarding gates — 6A and 6B — have also been created.

The facility includes passenger amenities such as retail and food-and-beverage outlets, occupying 66.40 sq m and 70.13 sq m respectively. A dedicated baby-care room with a diaper-changing station, washroom and hot and cold water facilities has also been provided.

The number of three-seater chairs equipped with power sockets has been increased. Digi Yatra facilities have also been provided in the pre-security hold area and at the boarding gates, subject to BCAS approval.

The upgraded facility is expected to increase Pune airport’s passenger-handling capacity by around 405 passengers per hour. Officials said this would help streamline passenger movement and reduce congestion at check-in and security areas, particularly during peak hours.

The Maharashtra Fire Services department issued the Fire NOC for the facility on May 9, 2026. An Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) exercise was conducted on July 22, followed by the final security inspection on July 30 and 31.

With only the final BCAS clearance pending, the renovated terminal is expected to become operational shortly, providing additional capacity and modern facilities to passengers at Pune airport.
