Pune Shuts Shops to Mourn Ajit Pawar’s Demise
Pune, 29th January 2026: Pune witnessed an unprecedented citywide shutdown on Thursday as residents observed a day of silence following the tragic death of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash in Baramati on Wednesday morning. Shops, markets, and commercial establishments across the city remained closed as a mark of respect for the veteran leader.
Major trading hubs, including the Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard, Bhusar Bazaar, and Bhawani Peth’s Timber Market, saw complete closure. Key commercial streets such as Laxmi Road, Mahatma Phule Mandi, JM Road, FC Road, Tulshibaug, Kumthekar Road, Bajirao Road, and Raviwar Peth’s Bohri Ali area remained non-operational. Suburban markets in Manjri, Moshi, Khadki, and Uttam Nagar also observed the shutdown.
Farmers refrained from sending produce to the markets, adding to the unusual quiet in the city’s normally bustling trade areas. Public and community organizations, including Ganeshotsav committees, displayed banners and tributes in memory of Pawar.
“The city has rarely seen such a quiet day,” said a market official. “This reflects the deep grief and respect that people across Pune feel for Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.”
The shutdown highlighted the widespread impact of Pawar’s sudden demise, as residents, traders, and civic bodies came together to honour a leader widely respected for his contributions to Maharashtra’s politics and development.
