Wagholi, 29th January 2026: A shocking incident raising serious questions about student safety came to light in Pune’s Wagholi area on Tuesday afternoon, when a school bus driver, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, rammed into four two-wheelers and a car and dragged some of them for a short distance.

The incident occurred around 2.45 pm on the Wagholi Bypass Road. No one was killed or seriously injured, but the situation was extremely dangerous and caused panic among motorists and pedestrians in the area.

According to the police, the arrested driver has been identified as Batta Vasant Rasale (50), a resident of Wagholi. He was driving a bus of Indo Scots Global School and was on his way to drop around 30 to 40 students at their homes when he lost control of the vehicle and hit multiple vehicles on the road.

Eyewitnesses said that even after the collision, the driver did not stop the bus and continued dragging some of the vehicles for a short distance, creating chaos in the area.

After the incident, local citizens chased the bus and raised an alarm. The driver eventually stopped the vehicle. When people realised that he was driving in a drunken condition, angry residents thrashed him before handing him over to the police. A large crowd had gathered at the spot.

A complaint in the case has been filed by police constable Prashant Bhagwan Dhumal (36). The police have arrested the driver and further investigation is underway.

The incident has once again put the spotlight on the negligence of school authorities and transport systems. Questions are being raised about how effective regular vehicle inspections, medical tests of drivers, and strict controls on alcohol consumption really are when it comes to vehicles carrying schoolchildren.

Though a major tragedy was averted, citizens have expressed strong concern that such carelessness could lead to serious consequences in the future if not addressed with strict action and monitoring.
