New Delhi, 31st January 2026: Getting a FASTag for new cars, jeeps and vans will become easier from February 1, as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has removed the mandatory Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process at the time of tag issuance. The move is aimed at reducing delays and simplifying the activation process for vehicle owners.

Under the new guidelines, even vehicles that already have FASTags will no longer be required to undergo routine KYV verification. This means owners with valid documents will not have to wait for additional checks after the tag is issued. Earlier, many users complained that their FASTags remained inactive for days due to prolonged verification by banks or authorities.

NHAI said the decision is intended to eliminate post-issuance hassles and ensure faster activation of FASTags. Once a tag is issued, it will no longer require repeated updates or re-verification unless there is a specific issue.

KYV to Be Done Only If a Complaint Arises
Officials clarified that KYV has not been completely scrapped but has been made “need-based.” Verification will now be carried out only if there is a complaint related to misuse, incorrect issuance, or if a FASTag is found to be loose or faulty. For FASTags functioning normally, no additional documents will be sought.

Banks to Verify Vehicles Through Government Portal
NHAI has also revised the process for banks issuing FASTags. Before activating a tag, banks will now be required to verify vehicle details directly through the government vehicle database portal. This pre-activation validation will ensure that vehicle information is matched digitally, removing the need for customers to visit offices for manual verification later.

Officials said this digital automation will make the system faster, more transparent, and more user-friendly.

Smoother Toll Payments Expected
An NHAI official said the reform is focused on saving time for everyday road users. In the past, even after submitting valid documents, many users faced payment issues at toll plazas due to pending KYV verification.

“With this change, toll payments will become more seamless and hassle-free for commuters,” the official said, adding that the new system will improve the overall FASTag experience for millions of vehicle owners across the country.
