Pune, 19th February 2026: The Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Pune has intensified its enforcement drive against auto-rickshaw drivers flouting prescribed norms, warning that habitual offenders could face suspension or even cancellation of their driving licences.

Officials said that despite repeated awareness campaigns and inspections, several drivers continue to disregard transport department regulations, prompting stricter measures.

Between April 2025 and January 2026, the RTO took action against 517 auto-rickshaw drivers for violating operational rules. Each offender was fined ₹700, leading to a total penalty collection of ₹3.61 lakh.

Authorities admitted that while enforcement drives have been ongoing, non-compliance remains a persistent issue in the city.

According to official data, Pune had around 1.29 lakh registered auto-rickshaw drivers by the end of 2025. Under the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Rules, drivers are required to wear a prescribed uniform and display a valid identification badge while operating their vehicles.

The approved dress code mandates a white or khaki shirt paired with pyjama, along with a prominently displayed badge bearing the driver’s identification number. Officials emphasised that the rule is intended to enhance commuter safety, ensure accountability, and maintain discipline in public transport services.

However, the RTO has received multiple complaints from passengers alleging that several drivers operate without uniforms or badges and engage in fare-related disputes. Such violations, officials said, erode public trust and disrupt orderly transport services.

Daily Inspection Drives Intensified

In response, the RTO has strengthened its daily inspection drives through a dedicated enforcement team tasked with conducting independent checks across the city.

Officials confirmed that monetary penalties may no longer suffice in cases of repeated violations. Under provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, the department can initiate proceedings to suspend or permanently cancel a driver’s licence if non-compliance continues.

Deputy Regional Transport Officer Swapnil Bhosale stated that the department is committed to ensuring discipline among public transport operators.

“Strict action will be taken against drivers who repeatedly violate rules. Our enforcement teams are conducting independent inspections to ensure compliance,” he said.

The RTO has urged auto-rickshaw drivers to adhere to uniform and badge regulations, prominently display identification details, and comply with traffic and service norms to avoid stringent action.
