Pune: Supporter Storms Ring, Mallikarjun Title Bout Ends in Controversy
Mulshi, 20th February 2026: A high-stakes wrestling showdown in Pune district ended in controversy after crowd unrest forced organisers to halt the contest and declare joint winners, overshadowing what was meant to be a grand sporting spectacle.
The disruption occurred on February 17 during the prestigious Mallikarjun Wrestling Title competition in Paud village of Mulshi taluka. The marquee bout — carrying a prize purse of ₹11 lakh — featured Maharashtra Kesari titleholder Sikandar Shaikh against seasoned wrestler Mauli Kokate. International referee Rohidas Appa was officiating the headline clash.
For nearly an hour, the two competitors engaged in an intense and evenly balanced contest before a packed arena. Organisers repeatedly announced that the bout would continue until a decisive outcome was achieved, building anticipation as neither wrestler yielded ground.
The flashpoint reportedly arose during a forceful exchange when Kokate is alleged to have made contact near Shaikh’s neck. The Maharashtra Kesari champion immediately objected, leading to a heated verbal exchange between the two wrestlers in full public view.
Tensions escalated swiftly. Eyewitnesses and widely shared mobile phone videos indicate that one of Kokate’s supporters entered the arena and allegedly attempted to strike Shaikh before being restrained. Soon after, additional supporters were seen moving toward the ring in a confrontational manner, sparking panic among sections of the audience.
The festive atmosphere quickly gave way to whistles, shouting and confusion, compelling officials and coaches to intervene. Shaikh’s coach, Vishal Hargule, rushed into the arena to calm the situation. Although efforts were made to resume the match, the charged environment and security concerns made continuation unfeasible.
With tempers running high, organisers opted for a compromise solution, declaring both Sikandar Shaikh and Mauli Kokate joint winners and formally concluding the contest.
The episode has drawn sharp criticism from members of the wrestling fraternity, who have described it as a setback to the discipline and ethos of traditional kushti. Critics argue that interference by supporters compromises the integrity of competitive sport — particularly when a Maharashtra Kesari titleholder is allegedly targeted inside the arena. As video clips continue to circulate on social media, the incident has intensified calls for stronger crowd management and security protocols at large rural sporting events to safeguard sportsmanship and fair play.
