Pune: PMC Demolishes 6,500 Sq Ft of Illegal Constructions in Viman Nagar
Viman Nagar, 4th March 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Wednesday carried out an enforcement drive in Viman Nagar, demolishing unauthorised constructions at several locations, including portions of commercial establishments that had allegedly encroached upon mandatory front margins.
The action began in the morning hours and targeted structures that officials said were built beyond permissible limits under development control rules. Among the establishments where action was taken was Rameshwaram Cafe, where the civic body removed what it described as illegal extensions in the front setback area.
A senior official from the building permission department said the drive was aimed at clearing encroachments that were obstructing pedestrian movement and affecting road visibility. “Front margins are mandatory open spaces. Any permanent structure in these areas is a violation. We had issued notices earlier, and after due procedure, the demolition was carried out,” the official said.
The operation was also conducted near Neco Garden, Sambar Hotel Lane, Krishna Hotel Chowk and Ganpati Mandir Chowk. Heavy machinery was deployed to dismantle the unauthorised portions, while police personnel were present to maintain law and order during the exercise.
According to civic authorities, around 6,500 square feet of illegal construction was cleared during the drive. Officials said the action followed complaints from local residents and commuters about congestion and safety hazards caused by encroachments in the busy neighbourhood.
PMC officials indicated that similar drives would continue in other parts of the city. “The objective is to ensure compliance with building norms and to protect public spaces from misuse. Action will be taken wherever violations are found,” an official added.
Several residents expressed support for the move, stating that strict enforcement is necessary in rapidly developing areas such as Viman Nagar to prevent obstruction of footpaths and roads and to maintain planned urban growth.
