Pune: PMC Identifies 31 Spaces for Parking Near Metro Stations
Pune, 5th March 2026: In a move aimed at improving last-mile connectivity for metro commuters, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated steps to develop parking facilities near metro stations across the city. The civic body recently inspected 34 amenity spaces located within a 500-metre radius of metro stations and found that 31 of them are suitable for developing parking infrastructure.
The metro has become a key component of Pune’s public transport network and has received a positive response from commuters. However, the lack of adequate parking near stations has posed difficulties for passengers who rely on private vehicles to reach metro stops.
To address this issue and encourage more residents to use the metro, PMC has begun planning parking facilities near several stations. Currently, two metro corridors operated by MahaMetro are functional in the city — the Vanaz–Ramwadi corridor and the Pimpri-Chinchwad–Swargate corridor.
Meanwhile, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is executing the metro line between Hinjawadi and Shivajinagar, which is expected to open for commuters in the near future.
According to civic officials, the existing metro lines are witnessing strong commuter response, with nearly 1.5 to 2 lakh passengers travelling daily. Authorities believe that providing convenient parking near stations will further boost ridership and help reduce traffic congestion in the city.
“PMC has taken the initiative to create parking facilities along all three metro corridors. We inspected 34 amenity spaces across the city and found that 31 locations within a 500-metre radius of metro stations, falling under the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) zone, can be used for parking. Work is underway to develop these spaces, and four locations have already been made available,” said Dinkar Gojare, head of the PMC project department.
The city is also working to expand its metro network. Construction of the metro line between PCMC and Bhakti-Shakti Chowk in Nigdi is currently underway, while work has begun on the Swargate–Katraj stretch. The proposed Vanaz–Chandani Chowk corridor is also expected to start soon.
In addition, plans are being explored for metro routes connecting Khadakwasla–Swargate–Magarpatta–Kharadi and Hingane to Nal Stop.
A new proposal for a metro corridor linking Wakad, Katraj and Shewalewadi has also been submitted to PMC. The civic body has informed MahaMetro that it has no objection to preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project. Officials said a feasibility study will be conducted first, after which a decision will be taken on preparing the DPR.
