Pune: Gas-Based Crematoriums Temporarily Shut in Pune After LPG Supply Priority Order
Pune, 9th March 2026: Gas-based crematorium furnaces in areas under the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have been temporarily shut after the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas directed that propane and butane supplies be prioritised for domestic LPG distribution, resulting in a short-term gas shortage in the city.
Civic authorities said the suspension of gas-operated crematorium units came into effect on March 5, 2026, and will remain in place until further instructions are issued.
The development was confirmed by Manisha Shekatkar, Chief Engineer (Electrical) of the municipal corporation, through an official press release. She said the decision was taken due to a temporary disruption in gas availability, while ensuring that alternative facilities remain operational so that citizens do not face inconvenience.
Gas Furnaces at Vaikunth Temporarily Closed:
At the city’s largest cremation facility, Vaikunth Crematorium, three gas-based furnaces have been temporarily closed due to the supply constraints. However, PMC clarified that five electric crematorium units at the same facility will continue functioning for conducting last rites.
Bibwewadi Crematorium Still Operational:
Meanwhile, two gas-based furnaces at the Bibwewadi Crematorium remain operational as they receive gas supply from Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited. Residents from nearby areas such as Dhankawadi and Katraj have been advised to use this facility if required.
To reduce the burden on Vaikunth Crematorium, civic officials have urged residents to utilise the electric cremation facilities located across the city.
These include crematoriums at:
Yerawada Crematorium near Gunjan Chowk on Nagar Road
Kharadi Crematorium in Kharadi village
Kailas Crematorium near SSPMS Ground
Kothrud Crematorium in Guruganesh Nagar
Baner Crematorium on the Aundh–Baner Link Road
Ganganagar Crematorium
Officials added that electric furnaces equipped with Air Pollution Control (APC) systems will remain operational to ensure cremation services continue without disruption.
The civic administration has appealed to citizens to use the nearest available electric crematorium facilities wherever possible to avoid overcrowding at Vaikunth and ensure smooth management of cremation services during the temporary gas shortage.
