Pune, March 15, 2026: The much-awaited Shivajinagar–Hinjewadi Metro corridor has missed yet another deadline and will now open in phases, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Sunday.

Fadnavis said the 23-km elevated metro line will be inaugurated in two stages, with the first 11-km stretch expected to open in May and the remaining 12-km section likely to become operational in July this year. CM was in Pune on Sunday to inaugurate the Pune Metro Bhavan, a new office of the Metro authority in the city.

As per the earlier revised deadline, the project was expected to be completed by the end of March, and operations were likely to begin in April. However, the timeline has been pushed again, marking another delay in the long-pending project.

The Shivajinagar–Hinjewadi corridor, which connects the city with the Hinjewadi IT Park, is among the first metro projects in the country being executed under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.

The project has faced multiple delays over the past few years. Initially scheduled to be completed last year, the deadline was later extended to March this year. However, the project has once again failed to meet the revised timeline.

The metro line is considered crucial for thousands of IT professionals who commute daily to the Hinjewadi IT Park. IT employees’ associations and regular commuters have repeatedly urged authorities to speed up the work, especially as traffic congestion on the Shivajinagar–Hinjewadi route continues to worsen.
