Pune: After Years of Demand, Kharadi Finally Gets Its First Public Garden
Kharadi, 16th March 2026: Kharadi is set to get its first dedicated public garden and green zone, marking a significant step towards creating accessible green spaces in one of Pune’s rapidly developing neighbourhoods.
The initiative has been led by PMCWarriors, a group of citizens and working professionals engaged in addressing civic issues across the city in coordination with the Pune Municipal Corporation. After months of follow-ups, documentation and coordination with civic authorities, the effort culminated in the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the PMC Garden Department in October 2025. With the formal procedures completed, work on the garden began on Sunday.
According to members involved in the initiative, the project required coordination with several departments of the civic body, including the Estate Department and the Garden Department, to complete land transfer formalities and obtain the necessary administrative approvals. The process involved identifying suitable land, securing approvals and completing the transfer procedures.
Jayesh Maduskar, chairman of Nyati Elysia Cronus in Kharadi and a member of PMCWarriors, described the initiative as both challenging and rewarding. He said the project required sustained citizen participation beyond routine civic engagement.
Members of the group also acknowledged the support of officials from the Garden Department, including Superintending Officer Ashok Ghorpade, along with Preeti Prasad and Chandrakant Gawali, for their role in facilitating the project.
Maduskar further expressed appreciation to PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram and Mayor Manjusha Nagpure for encouraging citizen-driven initiatives and supporting collaborative efforts aimed at improving urban liveability.
Beyond obtaining administrative approvals, members of PMCWarriors also worked with the implementing agency on aspects such as garden design, landscaping and sustainable water arrangements. According to the group, the aim is to create a green space that is functional, environmentally responsible and accessible to residents of all age groups.
Retired Brigadier Pramod Singh, a member of PMCWarriors, said the initiative demonstrates the potential of constructive citizen participation. He noted that cooperation between citizens and the administration can lead to meaningful improvements in urban infrastructure.
Other members of the group, including Ganesh Satras, Akash Thaiwat, Akshay Bachhal and Satish R., said the objective of the initiative was to create a much-needed green space for residents of Kharadi, which has seen rapid urbanisation in recent years.
PMCWarriors said it hopes continued support from newly elected corporators will further strengthen collaboration between citizens and the civic administration and help accelerate similar initiatives in Kharadi and other parts of Pune.
As groundwork begins, the upcoming garden is expected to provide a recreational and green space for local residents while also highlighting the role of community participation in urban development.
