Pune, 24th March 2026: In a shocking incident that has raised serious questions over urban safety and regulatory compliance, a borewell drilling operation for a private construction project damaged an underground tunnel of the Pune Metro, narrowly averting a potential disaster.

The incident occurred in a locality above an operational underground metro stretch, where drilling work was underway to install a borewell. During the excavation, the drilling machine reportedly penetrated deep enough to breach the roof of the metro tunnel, creating a hole in the structure.

Officials said the situation could have turned catastrophic had a metro train been passing through the tunnel at the time or if the damage had gone unnoticed. Fortunately, the breach was detected in time, preventing any injuries or major disruption.

The incident has once again brought the issue of underground safety and monitoring in metro corridors into sharp focus. As per regulations, any excavation or borewell activity in areas falling along metro alignments requires prior approval from the concerned authorities. Preliminary findings suggest that due procedures may not have been followed in this case.

The metro administration has initiated immediate repair work and is assessing the extent of structural damage. Authorities have also indicated that strict action will be taken against those responsible for violating safety norms.

According to Chandrashekhar Tambavekar, Spokesperson of Pune Metro, the incident took place near Ring No. 471 in the Mandai area along the underground metro route. He confirmed that the situation is currently under control and that necessary measures have been taken to ensure safety.

Officials have urged citizens and contractors to strictly adhere to guidelines and verify metro route maps before undertaking any excavation work, warning that such negligence could endanger thousands of passengers and critical public infrastructure.
