From Modest Beginnings to D.Litt.: Shinde Emphasises Power of Education
Pune, 24th March 2026: “Education is one of the most powerful tools that can transform a person’s life, we should never be shy of any job, whether big or small. Where there is a will, there is always a way,” said veteran statesman Sushilkumar Shinde.
Symbiosis International University on Tuesday conferred the prestigious Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) (Honoris Causa) upon veteran statesman Sushilkumar Shinde at a special convocation ceremony held at its Lavale campus. The ceremony was presided over by Dr. S. B. Mujumdar, Chancellor, Symbiosis International University with noted scientist Raghunath Mashelkar as Chief Guest.
Accepting the honour, Shinde expressed humility and reflected on his journey from a modest upbringing in Solapur to holding key positions such as Chief Minister of Maharashtra and Union Home Minister. recalling his early struggles and underscoring the dignity of labour.
Shinde paid homage to pioneering educationists including Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Dhondo Keshav Karve, Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, Mahadev Govind Ranade and Gopal Krishna Gokhale, and praised the vision behind Symbiosis.
Delivering the convocation address, Mashelkar described Shinde’s life as a testament to perseverance and integrity, stating that “a life in public service is itself a form of scholarship.”
He highlighted the foresight of Dr. S. B. Mujumdar founded Symbiosis on the principle of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the world is one family), calling it highly relevant in today’s divided global landscape. He stressed that the future belongs to leaders with “borderless minds” who can collaborate across boundaries.
Concluding his address, Mashelkar urged students to embrace collaboration and collective progress. “Symbiosis is not just coexistence—it is co-creation. It is not just living together, it is rising together,” he said.
Dr. Vidya Yeravdekar, Pro Chancellor, Symbiosis International University, Dr. Ramakrishnan Raman, Vice Chancellor, SIU spoke about the achievements of the University and Dr. Sejul, Registrar, SIU gave the vote of thanks.
