After 130 years, Pune sees its Heaviest April Rainfall ever
Pune, 3rd April 2026: Pune has witnessed its heaviest April rainfall in more than 130 years, surpassing a record that had stood since the late 19th century.
Official data from the Indian Meterological Department (IMD) shows the previous high of 51.1 mm, recorded on April 4, 1896, has now been exceeded by a wide margin, marking this spell as the most intense April rain in the city’s recorded history.
The intense downpour on Thursday saw multiple parts of the city receive unusually high rainfall. The National Defence Academy (NDA) area recorded 84 mm, while Shivajinagar logged 65 mm. Other areas also witnessed substantial showers, with Hadapsar receiving 42 mm, Pashan 36.3 mm, Chinchwad 28.5 mm and Lohegaon 21 mm.
Historical data indicates that after the 1896 record, the city saw 48.2 mm rainfall on April 6, 1953, and 31.6 mm on April 28, 1959. In the decades that followed, April rainfall figures largely remained below 30 mm, typically ranging between 22 mm and 27 mm.
Officials said the latest spell stands out not only for its intensity but also for breaking a long-standing record, underlining the unusual nature of the unseasonal weather witnessed this week.
