Pune: Corporator Suhas Tingre Alleges Selective Action by PMC on Polluting RMC Plants
Vishrantwadi, 4th April 2026: Concerns over alleged selective enforcement of environmental regulations by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have been raised by a city corporator, who has questioned the civic body’s action against Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) plants while pollution issues linked to an asphalt plant in Yerawada remain unresolved.
Corporator and standing committee member Suhas V. Tingre told Punekar News, “The recent crackdown on RMC plants within city limits, citing pollution concerns, was a welcome step but highlighted what he described as “double standards” in enforcement.”
Tingre alleged that an asphalt plant operated by the Pune Municipal Corporation in Yerawada has been causing environmental pollution in nearby residential areas for several decades. According to him, residents, particularly those living in Yerawada Vasti, have repeatedly complained about the impact of the plant on their health and environment.
He claimed that people living in the vicinity have reported health issues due to prolonged exposure to pollution from the facility. Several representations, along with photographic evidence, have been submitted to the civic administration over the years, and the issue has also been raised at meetings of the PMC standing committee.
Despite these complaints, Tingre said no concrete action has been taken to address the problem. He further alleged that the civic body is now planning to install an additional high-capacity asphalt plant at the same location, which could worsen the situation for nearby residents.
Questioning the civic administration’s approach, Tingre said strict action is being taken against certain facilities in the city while similar or more severe pollution concerns in other areas remain unaddressed. He also expressed concern that areas inhabited by economically weaker sections may be receiving less attention when it comes to environmental enforcement.
Tingre said he had earlier submitted a detailed representation along with supporting documents to Pune Mayor Manjushree Nagpure but claimed that no action has been taken so far.
In the press note, he demanded an immediate review of pollution levels caused by the Yerawada asphalt plant and called for the suspension of plans to install any additional facility at the site. He also urged the civic administration to consider relocating the existing plant away from densely populated residential areas.
Emphasising the need for uniform enforcement of environmental norms, Tingre said residents of Yerawada deserve the same level of protection and attention as citizens in other parts of Pune.
