Reported by Akshata Pawar
Lucknow/Pune, 13th April 2026: Moments before stepping onto the court, as most players focus on strategy and form, Major Nirbhay Singh Soin pauses for something far more critical, checking his blood sugar levels. Living with Type 1 diabetes and competing with an insulin pump, every match he plays is not just against an opponent, but against a condition that demands constant control.
Yet, in the past four months, this Indian Army officer has turned that daily challenge into a story of dominance, discipline, and quiet defiance.
Currently posted in Lucknow and hailing from Mohali, Punjab, Major Soin has emerged as one of the most consistent performers on the tennis circuit. His impressive run began in December 2025 with a title at the Friends Cup Winter Edition, followed by another victory at the UP State Tennis Championship in January 2026.
His momentum carried onto the international stage, where he clinched the ITF Masters Tour MT200 Rae Bareli title in February, competing against seasoned global players. He continued his winning streak with another international triumph at the ITF Masters Tour MT100 Lucknow in March.
These victories have propelled him to a World Ranking of 365 and an All India Ranking of 26 in the ITF Masters (30+) circuit, an achievement that reflects sustained excellence in a short span.
The Challenge Beyond Sport :
What sets Major Soin apart is not just his performance, but the complexity behind it.
Managing Type 1 diabetes requires continuous monitoring of blood glucose levels, precise insulin regulation, and careful balancing of nutrition and exertion. In a physically demanding sport like tennis, where matches can stretch for hours, this becomes an added layer of pressure that few athletes face.
Despite this, Major Soin has not only adapted but excelled, demonstrating exceptional discipline and mental resilience.
A Legacy of Service, A Story of Resilience :
A third-generation officer in the Indian Army, Major Soin embodies the values of perseverance, commitment, and courage, both in uniform and on the court. His journey reflects a mindset shaped by service, where challenges are met with preparation and resolve.
His story is resonating far beyond the world of sports. For young people, particularly those dealing with physical or medical challenges, his achievements stand as a powerful reminder that limitations can be redefined.
At a time when barriers often discourage ambition, Major Soin’s journey offers a compelling message: excellence is not the absence of obstacles, but the determination to rise above them.
Major Soin’s success is not just measured in titles or rankings, it lies in the boundaries he continues to push.
In doing so, he is not only winning matches, but also reshaping perceptions of what is possible, with grit, discipline, and unwavering resolve.
