Pune: Drunk Tanker Driver Caught Entering Housing Society in Mohammadwadi, Case Registered
Pune, 13th April 2026: Less than week after two fatal tanker accidents in the area, a water tanker driver was found allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol in Mohammadwadi, prompting fresh concerns among residents over road safety.
The Kalepadal police have registered a case against the driver on Sunday. Police said the case has been registered based on a complaint filed by a constable from Kalepadal police station. The driver has been booked under Section 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rash and negligent driving endangering human life, along with Sections 184 and 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act related to dangerous driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.
On April 5, a 19-year-old, Aariz Shaikh, was killed in a tanker accident in Mohammadwadi. Within 48 hours, a 22-year-old woman died in Wanowrie after her scooter was hit by a tanker.
The latest incident surfaced on Sunday when PMC corporator from Kondhwa, Kashif Sayyad, intercepted a tanker entering a housing society after noticing suspicious movement. The driver was alone, without a helper. Sayyad said that as soon as the driver stepped out of the vehicle, the smell of alcohol indicated he was intoxicated.
“We immediately informed the police, who took him into custody for further action. The tanker owner also reached the spot,” Sayyad said, adding that a breath analyser available at the society confirmed that the driver was drunk.
Despite protests by residents demanding stricter action, locals said tanker operators continue to flout norms, putting commuters at risk. Some residents also suggested that authorities consider restricting tanker movement to night hours to reduce accidents.
