Pune, 15th April 2026: Residents of Mohammadwadi, Undri, Kondhwa, and Pisoli, who have been grappling with severe water supply shortages for several years, may finally see a resolution to their woes. The much-delayed water tank and pipeline projects in these areas have reached their final stages, with official trial runs scheduled to commence by mid-May.

Virendra Kelkar, Acting Water Supply Engineer for Cantonment Water Works, provided an update on the project’s status following persistent demands and agitation from local citizens and elected representatives.

“Citizens and honorable members have been insisting on this for the last many years. Now, this work has reached its final stage,” Kelkar stated.

“The construction of the water tanks is already complete. Our effort will be to finish the remaining water pipeline work by May 15 and immediately begin the trial runs. As we conduct the trials, we will address and solve any distribution difficulties to ensure a smooth, 100% water supply to the residential societies.”

Hurdles and Delays

Addressing the reasons behind the prolonged project delays, Kelkar explained that a critical 100-meter stretch of the transmission line on the Katraj-Kondhwa road has been a significant hurdle. “We are executing this 100-meter work using the ‘jack and push’ method to lay the pipeline beneath existing residential structures. This complex process has caused some unavoidable delays,” he noted.

The Trial Process

The upcoming testing phase will be a meticulous and time-consuming process. Water for these areas will be drawn from the Vadgaon water works.

“Bringing water all the way from Vadgaon to these tanks means the trial itself will take time,” Kelkar explained. “We have to fill the entire line, flush and wash it, and ensure the tanks are completely clean. We must also clean the forward distribution lines, flush out all the old, dirty water, and then test the supply. We are aiming to complete all these preparatory tasks by May 15.”

Future Expansion for Un-networked Areas

When questioned about specific pockets in Undri, such as the Corinthian Club and Country Club areas that currently lack a pipeline network, Kelkar emphasized a phased approach.

“Our first priority is to activate and operationalize the water supply in the areas where the pipeline network has already been laid,” he said. “Once this current network is fully functional and stabilized, we will evaluate our capacity and make efforts to extend the water supply to nearby un-networked areas wherever possible.”
