Pune: Residents in Undri, Mohammadwadi to Pay More as Tanker Operators Hike Water Charges by 10%
Pune, 18th April 2026: Residents of several housing societies in Undri, Mohammadwadi and the NIBM Annexe area will have to shell out more for water after private tanker operators increased charges by around 10 per cent, adding to the burden on localities that remain dependent on tanker supply despite paying civic water tax.
The revised rates come days after a one-day tanker strike disrupted supply in parts of south Pune. In a letter issued to housing societies on April 15, operators informed residents that the rate for 9,000 litres of water had been increased from around Rs 700 to Rs 800, citing higher operational costs.
Several societies in these areas continue to rely entirely on private tankers due to the absence of regular water supply from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
The tanker operators said the rate hike was necessary because of rising expenses during the summer season. According to operators, local borewells often run dry, forcing them to source water from distant areas such as Wagholi, resulting in higher fuel and transportation costs. They also cited additional expenses such as mandatory CCTV camera installations and other compliance measures.
Residents say the latest hike has further increased the financial pressure on families already coping with the high cost of living. They added that despite rapid residential growth in Undri, Mohammadwadi and adjoining areas, civic amenities such as piped water supply have failed to keep pace.
