Pune: Bike Rider Injured After Coming Under Water Tanker In Undri
Undri, 19th April 2026: A 23-year-old two-wheeler rider was injured after being run over by a water tanker at Kadnagar Chowk near the Mohammadwadi–Undri junction on Sunday night, adding to growing safety concerns over frequent tanker-related accidents in the area.
The injured has been identified as Shahbaj Mujawar (23), a resident of Tarawade Wasti. He sustained a leg fracture after his two-wheeler came under the front wheels of the tanker during the collision.
According to a doctor who witnessed the incident, the accident occurred at around 9:14 pm when the tanker, moving at a relatively high speed, took a turn towards the NIBM side. “Within moments, I heard a loud impact and saw that a road traffic accident had occurred. I reached the spot by around 9:18 pm. The tanker had collided with an Ertiga, and a two-wheeler was trapped under the front of the vehicle,” the doctor said.
He added that bystanders had already extricated the injured youth, who was found with a severe injury below the knee and active bleeding. “I assessed him on site—checked his pulse, level of consciousness, and screened for other injuries. There were no immediate life-threatening signs apart from the lower limb trauma,” he said.
To prevent further damage, the injured leg was immobilised using makeshift splints fashioned from sticks and secured with cloth materials, including dupattas provided by local women. The victim was then shifted to Precision Plus Hospital in a private vehicle with the help of a local resident, identified as Shelke. The hospital team had been alerted in advance and was prepared with orthopedic support. Mujawar is currently undergoing imaging and further treatment.
“In such situations, timely primary care at the scene can make a significant difference in outcomes,” the doctor noted.
The incident comes amid a series of tanker-related accidents reported in the Undri–Mohammadwadi belt in April, several of them fatal. In recent days, multiple two-wheeler riders have lost their lives in separate accidents involving water tankers in areas such as Hadapsar, NIBM, Wanowrie, and Undri, sparking public outrage and calls for stricter enforcement.
Residents have raised concerns over reckless driving by tanker operators, lack of trained drivers, and absence of safety mechanisms such as speed control and monitoring systems. The situation is further aggravated by narrow internal roads, steep gradients, and mixed traffic conditions.
The area remains heavily dependent on private water tankers due to incomplete civic water infrastructure, resulting in hundreds of tanker trips, increasing the risk of accidents.
Sunday’s incident, though non-fatal, highlights the continuing road safety crisis in the locality, with residents demanding urgent regulatory measures, infrastructure upgrades, and stricter action against violations.
