Pune, 20th April 2026: The vehicle market in Pune witnessed a subdued trend during the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya this year, with overall registrations declining compared to last year.

The slowdown was particularly sharp in the electric vehicle (EV) segment, where both two-wheelers and four-wheelers recorded a steep fall in demand.

According to data from the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO), a total of 7,579 vehicles were registered between April 12 and April 19, 2026. This marks a decline from 8,298 registrations recorded during the corresponding festive period last year.

The steepest drop was observed in the EV segment. Registrations fell by nearly 70%, from 893 units last year to just 306 this year. Electric two-wheelers declined from 678 to 228 units, while electric four-wheelers dropped from 203 to 78. Notably, no registrations were recorded this year in categories such as electric tourist taxis, auto-rickshaws, and goods carriers, which had a limited presence last year.

In contrast, conventional two-wheelers posted modest growth, with 4,992 registrations this year compared to 4,719 last year. However, the four-wheeler segment saw a decline, with registrations dropping from 2,593 to 1,973.

The auto-rickshaw segment also recorded a sharp dip, with only 71 registrations this year compared to 307 last year. Goods vehicle registrations declined from 356 to 326, while the ‘others’ category nearly halved from 87 to 43. Bus registrations saw a marginal increase, rising from 32 to 33 units.

Despite the festive slowdown, officials pointed to strong long-term growth in EV adoption. The Pune RTO recorded 12,737 electric vehicle registrations in the financial year 2024–25, which surged more than threefold to 37,808 registrations in 2025–26.

However, the sharp drop in EV purchases during the festive period has raised concerns about weakening short-term consumer demand in the segment.
