Pune: Techie Among Two Women Die by Suicide in Wagholi; Dowry Harassment Alleged, Husbands Arrested
Wagholi, 20th April 2026: Two separate incidents of suicide linked to alleged dowry-related harassment have been reported from the Wagholi area, with police registering cases and making arrests in both matters.
In the first case, a 37-year-old computer engineer died by suicide at her residence. Based on a complaint filed by her brother, police arrested her husband, Abhishek Gupta (31), on charges of abetment to suicide. Cases have also been registered against her in-laws, including her mother-in-law, father-in-law and sister-in-law.
According to the complaint, the woman was allegedly subjected to sustained physical and mental harassment over a dowry demand of Rs 10 lakh. Unable to bear the alleged harassment, she died by suicide by hanging at her home. Police said the accused family members are originally from Agra in Uttar Pradesh. Assistant Police Inspector Vinayak Ahire is investigating the case.
In a separate incident in the Avhalwadi area of Wagholi, a 21-year-old married woman also died by suicide. Police have registered a case against her husband and mother-in-law, and arrested the husband, Jaysingh Madhukar Kadam (29).
According to the complaint, the woman was allegedly harassed to bring a gold ring from her parental home and pressured to arrange money to pay vehicle instalments. The alleged demands led to continued mental and physical harassment. She died by suicide by hanging at her residence.
Sub-Inspector Amol Kale is investigating the second case. Police said further investigation is underway in both cases.
