Erandwane, 27th April 2026: Allegations of serious irregularities have surfaced at a water tanker filling station in Patwardhan Baug, Erandwane, raising fresh concerns over the functioning of the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) free tanker supply system.

According to findings highlighted during a recent inspection, while nearly 50 water tankers were reportedly filled at the centre, official records showed entries for only 18 tankers. The discrepancy has triggered questions about transparency and monitoring in the civic body’s tanker operations.

It was also observed that the water meter at the filling point has been non-functional since December 16, 2025. The facility caters to a large area, supplying water through tankers to wards 10, 11, 29, 30, 31, 32 and 33. With the meter not working, concerns have been raised over whether the actual quantity of water supplied is being accurately recorded.

The issue was earlier flagged by BJP leader Sandeep Khardekar, president of Creative Foundation, who cited evidence from a purported sting operation. According to him, while only 18 tanker entries were made in the register, as many as 50 tankers were filled in reality. Following earlier complaints, meters had reportedly been installed at tanker filling points, but their prolonged non-functioning has again raised questions about administrative oversight.

Another concern highlighted is the absence of any system to obtain signatures or acknowledgements from housing societies or localities receiving the tanker water. This has led to doubts about whether the supplied water is actually reaching the intended beneficiaries.

Khardekar has demanded an immediate inquiry into the matter and a comprehensive inspection of all tanker filling points across the city. He has also urged the PMC to ensure that all non-functional meters are made operational without delay and that obtaining acknowledgements after each tanker delivery be made mandatory.

Additionally, he has called for maintaining proper records detailing the reasons and authorisation for dispatching free water tankers. He warned that unless corrective measures are taken, similar irregularities could affect future projects, including the proposed 24×7 water supply system.
