Summer Heat in Pune: Swimming Pools Witness 5X Rise in Visitors
Pune, 28th April 2026: With temperatures soaring close to 40°C in April, residents in Pune are grappling with intense heat, leading to a sharp surge in footfall at swimming pools across the city. While roads remain relatively deserted during peak afternoon hours, citizens—especially children—are flocking to pools to beat the heat.
Swimming pools that typically record around 50 to 60 visitors a day are now witnessing a significant spike, with daily attendance rising to 350–400. Apart from regular members, special summer batches have further added to the rush, keeping facilities busy throughout the day.
Children make up a large share of the crowd, with several pools offering dedicated baby pool facilities for toddlers aged two to three years. Women’s participation has also increased, aided by separate time slots and a safer environment.
Authorities and private operators have stepped up safety measures, including the deployment of trained lifeguards for every batch, CCTV surveillance, and emergency medical facilities. Monthly swimming fees range between ₹1,000 and ₹3,000, with some clubs offering seasonal discounts.
Swimming sessions are typically conducted from 6 am to 12 noon and again from 3 pm to 9 pm, with around 15 to 16 batches scheduled daily. Pool operators are also maintaining strict hygiene standards, regularly monitoring water quality, cleanliness, and pH levels. Additional lifeguards have been deployed to manage the increased number of visitors.
Rajesh Sapkal, Sports Manager at Solaris Sports Club, said the demand has risen significantly due to the ongoing heatwave.
Meanwhile, civic authorities have carried out inspections of swimming pools across the city to ensure compliance with safety norms. Asha Raut, Deputy Commissioner of the Municipal Sports Department, said lifeguards are present at all locations and trainers have been equipped with lifesaving skills to enhance emergency preparedness.
