Pune, 5th May 2026: A 19-day-long strike by Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) plant operators in the district has begun to severely impact construction activity across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, with work on nearly 1,000 housing projects coming to a standstill.

Despite the prolonged disruption, operators claim their demands have not received serious attention from the administration, forcing them to continue the agitation.

The strike has been called over key demands, including the introduction of a uniform policy for RMC plants within municipal corporation and PMRDA limits, and an extension of operational time restrictions imposed by the police. The district has around 300 RMC plants that supply concrete for residential and commercial construction, as well as road and infrastructure projects in both urban and rural areas.

With operations suspended, the availability of ready mix concrete has dropped to zero, directly affecting construction timelines. Slab work at several sites has been halted, raising concerns of further delays with the monsoon approaching.

The ripple effect of the strike is being felt across the construction ecosystem. Demand for essential raw materials such as cement, aggregates, and crusher supplies has declined sharply, putting suppliers under financial strain. While a few large township projects with in-house RMC facilities continue work, most small and mid-sized projects have come to a complete halt.

Developers have warned of multiple consequences, including delays in handing over flats to buyers, rising project costs, and the need to seek deadline extensions from the Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA).

“Construction projects have come to a halt due to the shutdown of RMC plants. It has become difficult to manage loan repayments and pay workers’ salaries. Many operators are facing financial distress. The state government and civic authorities must urgently address our demands,” said Ranjit Patil, an RMC plant operator.

Construction stakeholders have urged the administration to intervene at the earliest and resolve the issue to prevent further economic losses and project delays.
