Pune: Massive Fire Guts Decoration Material Warehouse in Bibvewadi, Major Disaster Averted
Bibvewadi, 12th May 2026: A massive fire gutted an 8,000 sq ft warehouse storing tent and decoration material in Bibvewadi’s Upper Depot area on Tuesday afternoon, destroying large quantities of carpets, fabric and several vehicles parked on the premises. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control before it could spread to nearby residential buildings and shops, officials said.
According to the Fire Brigade department of the Pune Municipal Corporation, the control room received information about the blaze at around 1.23 pm at Kale and Sons godown, located opposite Oswal Hospital near Upper Depot in Bibvewadi. Fire tenders were immediately rushed to the spot.
Upon reaching the site, firefighters found that the blaze had intensified rapidly and posed a threat to nearby residential areas and shops. Fire personnel launched an operation from all four sides to prevent the flames from spreading and also ensured that no one was trapped inside the premises.
Officials said the fire broke out in an 8,000 sq ft warehouse that stored large quantities of tent and decoration material, including carpets, cloth and other event supplies. One four-wheeler tempo and seven two-wheelers parked at the site were also destroyed in the fire.
A total of seven fire engines, three water tankers and 11 tankers from the Pune Municipal Corporation were deployed to douse the flames. One fire engine from the Pune Cantonment Fire Brigade also assisted in the operation.
Chief Fire Officer Devendra Potphode said the prompt response by firefighters helped avert a major disaster.
“Considering the intensity of the fire and the continuous calls received at the control room, additional fire vehicles were immediately dispatched from all sides. Since there were residential areas and shops nearby, the firefighters acted swiftly to prevent the fire from spreading further and brought the situation under control in time,” Potphode said.
The firefighting operation was carried out under the guidance of Potphode, along with fire officers Vijay Bhilare, Samir Shaikh, Sunil Naik Navare and Kailas Shinde. Nearly 50 firefighters participated in the operation.
