Pune, 15th May 2026: Pune Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram on Friday visited Mohammadwadi to review the final preparations for the official launch of the long-pending water pipeline project, which is expected to be inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on May 17.

The visit comes as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) accelerates efforts to operationalise the equitable water distribution network in Mohammadwadi, Undri and adjoining areas that have faced severe water shortages for nearly two decades. Senior PMC officials inspected overhead tanks, transmission pipelines and distribution infrastructure in the locality ahead of the launch ceremony.

The commissioner’s inspection assumes significance as the project has emerged as one of PMC’s major civic infrastructure initiatives aimed at addressing chronic water scarcity in merged villages and rapidly urbanising suburbs. During a recent interaction with media, Ram had acknowledged that residents of Mohammadwadi and Undri had suffered due to lack of adequate water infrastructure for nearly 15 years and stressed the need for disciplined urban growth backed by civic amenities.

Speaking during the visit, PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said, “This project is a major step towards ensuring equitable water supply to residents of Mohammadwadi and Undri. The administration has worked on mission mode to complete the infrastructure, and we are committed to resolving the long-standing water issues faced by citizens in these areas.”

Residents and local welfare groups said the nearing completion of the project marks the culmination of years of sustained follow-up with the civic administration. The new network includes transmission lines connected to the Vadgaon water works and overhead tanks near Royale Heritage Mall, which have started supplying water to several residential societies in phases.

Ward No. 41 corporator Nivrutti Anna Bandal, who has been actively pursuing the issue with the PMC administration for hilltop zone in Undri welcomed the commissioner’s visit and said the project would bring major relief to thousands of families in Mohammadwadi

“For years, residents of Mohammadwadi and Undri suffered silently despite paying taxes and living in one of Pune’s fastest-growing areas. This project is not just about water pipelines; it is about restoring dignity and basic rights to citizens. The citizens forum continuously followed up with the PMC administration, and I thank Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram and Additional Commissioner Pavneet Kaur for taking the issue seriously and ensuring that this long-pending dream is finally becoming reality,” Bandal said lauding efforts of citizens.

Dhankikar, a representative associated with local resident groups involved in pursuing the issue, said the project reflected the power of sustained citizen participation. “This victory belongs to every resident who raised their voice for basic infrastructure. For years, citizens struggled with tanker dependency and uncertainty. Today, people finally feel heard and respected,” he said.

Tara Singh, a resident of Mohammadwadi, said families in the area had endured years of hardship due to irregular and inadequate water supply. “There were days when we had to depend entirely on private tankers and store water carefully for survival. The new water infrastructure gives hope that future generations in Mohammadwadi will not have to face the same suffering we endured for years,” Singh said.

The project has also gained political and administrative attention amid growing public pressure over water access in south Pune. PMC officials said the May 17 inauguration is expected to formally mark the beginning of large-scale water distribution to several housing societies in Mohammadwadi and nearby areas. However, residents from elevated hilltop pockets of Undri have continued to demand dedicated infrastructure and overhead reservoirs to ensure equitable supply in higher-altitude zones.
